Today, I visited the Kitano Tenmangu shrine in Kyoto’s western district. By the time the setsubun play commenced, a sizable crowd had gathered around Kagura-den, the Sacred Music Hall. The entire event spanned nearly 45 minutes. It was an incredible experience.

The bright red Bush Warbler Bridge crosses the Tenjin-gawa (river) beneath Kitano Tenmangu.

Steps lead up a remnant of the Odoi, a great earthen berm that once encircled Kyoto.

Orange maple leaves add a splash of colour to a bamboo grove.

The Tenjin River flows beside Kitano Tenmangu (the enshrined god of which gives the river its name). It once acted as a 'moat' for the Odoi berm.

🍁AUTUMN AT KYŌTO'S GREAT WALL🧱

During fall Kitano Tenmangū allows guests to enjoy the maples that grow along the Odoi (御土居). Now mostly leveled, this great berm was created by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉 1537-98) to encircle and define the boundaries of the city.
