One of my very first mountain photos. Circa 1974.
The Tetons are still on my list to go back to.

Kodak X-15: My mom gave me this camera for Christmas when I was 10. I can’t imagine how many rolls of film she paid to develop—only to get blurry shots, fingers in the frame, or my “artistic” compositions of trash cans and toilets. It's disappointing that they quit making 126 film cartridges 25 years ago. I't like to use it again. Just to see if I can get better photos.

Pentax K1000: I bought this right after finishing Army basic training at the Fort Polk PX. My first SLR—fully manual. Manual focus, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. It wasn’t the best camera available, but it was the best I could afford as an E2 private making $640 a month. A great camera to learn on.

Minolta 7xi: My pride and joy for years. When I bought it, it was hands down the most advanced autofocus camera on the market. It was the first to use AI—Minolta called it “fuzzy logic.” With eye-start technology, it would begin focusing and metering as soon as I looked through the viewfinder. Paired with xi telephoto lenses, it even auto-zoomed to frame what it thought was the best composition. The matrix metering was awesome. Pretty advanced stuff for 1991, especially after shooting with the K1000 for six years.

The battery door broke sometime in the early 2000s, and like everyone else, I moved on to digital. By then, Sony had bought out Minolta. Recently, I found a replacement battery door on eBay, and to my surprise, the camera still works.

The 7xi represents a special time in my life—I was 26, making $100K a year clearing landmines in postwar Kuwait, and had no real adult responsibilities and was still confident of my immortality.

Since all the cool kids are shooting film again I dug out my remaining OG cameras to give it a go.
