More slöjd, another small spoon, this time in rowan. The heart-wood of rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) is brown, making the spoon look like it was partially stained.

A small wooden spoon (about 15cm long) with an egg shaped bowl and some kolrosing on the handle like if a ribbon was wrapped criss-cross around it. In the spaces formed by the "ribbons" three small stars. For size reference there is a small card with measurements, with the International Guild of Knot Tyers logo.

Flat wooden horse decorated with chip carving. Basswood, finished with cherry gel stain. Chip carving removes chips of wood, thus the name.

One of my fancier and most detailed chip carvings. An eight-pointed star ornament. Blue string attached for hanging.

My granddaughter learning pyrography! So fun. She is woodburning a butterfly. Woodburning removes small amounts of wood by burning it away.

Kolrosing is done by incising lines into wood, then rubbing a pigment into the lines with oil. I love using cinnamon for this! Kolrosing does not remove wood, but spreads it open with a sharp knife, to be filled with a powderized pigment mixed with oil. The particles are suspended in the incised lines in the oil. This is the smoothest technique, outside of drawing or painting on the wood

There are many kinds of surface decorations for wood. Besides painting, I present the three forms I use, which modify the wood in some way, rather than cover it up. Chip Carving, Pyrography and Kolrosong...

A flat basswood Dala Horse ornament with kolrosing on the surface.

Step one, draw the pattern onto the wood.

Step two, start cutting lines and rubbing color in with oil.

Step three, add darker colors. Seal with a final coat of a drying oil.

Kolrosing - like scrimshaw on wood, is an artform created by incising lines into wood, then rubbing oil and ashes, or other powder, into the lines. The pigment particles are suspended in the oil and sealed in. My Kolrosing for the #ArtAdventCalendar #Kolrosing
