Andrea Egan for General Secretary There are now just two, politically similar, candidates for Labour Deputy Leader, due to an undemocratic process. An artificially high nomination threshold was applied that UNISON, led by Christina McAnea, supported in 2021. As a result the candidate most committed to UNISON policies, who voted against the welfare cuts, a black working class woman, was kept off the ballot. A clear case of Christina McAnea acting against the interests of UNISON members & policies to help her allies in Starmer's Labour. As a result neither candidate on the ballot has a convincing track record of fighting for UNISON members or policies. UNISON members paying into Labour Link should be balloted to decide which candidate to endorse with an option of no endorsement. But will you be given that choice?
UNISON should consult relevant members on who to support for Labour Deputy Leader, or support neither candidate.
