Lamia Pathsways 190 Yes, she’s dangerous. You think she warped your mind, or tried to, without your consent. You shouldn’t trust her. You should get away from her. She leans closer, arms forward. You shove her away before she can draw your shoulders into her hug. “No way,” you say. “I’m not dealing with you. Just leave me alone.” You pull her slithering tail off your legs, but whenever you turn away she slides back into view, your shove not dissuading her smile. Her scent lingers around you, and her scaly body hangs among the branches as if she’s surrounding you with her world. “Now, now,” she says, “let me look at you.” As you push yourself off her coil seat she sways before you, eyes wide with pulsing colors. Your mind flashes with memories of her eyes. When she looked into your eyes, you lost all worries, all cares. You slipped along a soft stream into never-ending bliss. Her beauty overshadowed your thoughts, her charm stroked and massaged your mind with pleasure. It felt so good. Couldn’t you let her look into your eyes for a little bit? –20a Yes, just a little while is fine . . . –200 Wait, no! Look away!
Lamia Pathsways 200 As you gaze into the lamia’s eyes, the jungle warps, hazy and blurry, the sounds deep and deafened as if there’s stuffing in your ears, all your focus spiraling to the lamia. You shouldn’t look. Her eyes can hypnotize you! You yank your head away from her gaze as if the colors had reached in and grabbed hold of your mind. You stumble as your thoughts spin, your senses muffled. If you looked any longer they’d have been numbed to everything but the lamia. You can’t let her look at you with those hypnotic eyes. You lift your arms around your head so she can’t sneak a glance at your side. Though your hearing feels muted and warped, one voice sounds perfectly clear. “You don’t want me to look at you?” The lamia sounds hurt, her voice whimpering. Maybe it would’ve been okay to let her look at you for a little while— No! You tense up and shove away those contrite thoughts. She wants to hypnotize you. Don’t let her have her way. Her cool scales snake around the back of your head, and you shiver. The gentle scales of her plush tail feel as massaging as they did the other night. You mustn’t look into her eyes, but it’s not like her tail is hypnotic, right?
The haze starts to lift. As long as you don’t let her look into your eyes again you’ll be fine. The lamia pulls your head back towards her. Her scales rub you so softly you forget to resist. “Then, you look at me.” Your eyes widen as you find yourself staring into the lamia’s eyes, the pulsing colors grabbing your thoughts and stealing your attention. The haze falls back around you, the jungle melting away, your thoughts melting away. Your head leans forward against your hands as her eyes draw you back to her. She asked so nicely for you to look at her, and her eyes are so beautiful and so stunning, so relaxing to stare, so easy to forget everything but her captivating eyes. Lamia Pathsways 131 It would be rude to eavesdrop, and besides, you’re tired. You fall asleep in a leafy bush, and that may sound uncomfortable. The next morning! Baloo wakes you up, his face and voice somber. After a few minutes of reluctant waffling, he says you should go back to the human village. Well, dang! You thought you’d finally found someone who wanted you to stay, but Bagheera must have convinced him otherwise. Maybe he blackmailed Baloo. That must have been what they were talking about last night. You still have no intention of going to the village, so you leave Baloo. You can look after yourself, you can make it on your own. You may or may not shout something about showing them all—emotions run high, you don’t really remember. Eventually emotions run low as you mope alone through the jungle. Nobody seems to actually want you in the jungle, they either want you to leave or want something from you. Nobody wants you just for you. With a tired sigh—you’ve walked for a while and the air is thickly sweet around here—you sit on a hard root of a tall tree. Maybe you should return to the village, at least there you’ll be accepted. It doesn’t feel great being where nobody wants you. On the other hand, if you strike out on your own and prove you’re cool you’ll get lots of new jungle friends who will want you around!
You twitch and freeze as something long and pillow-soft wraps under your legs and around your waist, as cool and fluid as a fresh river. Before you realize it a plush, scaly seat lifts you off the ground. You rise above the tree foliage and to a branch where you find— “It’s you!” you shout. “That lamia!” It’s the lamia from the other night, the night Bagheera first told you to return to the human village. You jump back in surprise, but her sturdy tail holds you in place. She smiles at you, at first like she could eat you up, but then pityingly like you’re a wayward soul. “Yes, my dear human,” she says, “it’s so nice to see you again.” She chuckles, leaning closer as if to hug you. Memories of the night you met flash in your head. It felt so relaxing, so blissful to gaze into her eyes and sink into her coils. It seemed like she actually wanted you to stay in the jungle with her. Should you trust her, though? Everyone else turned against you. Maybe she has ulterior motives. -182 Trust her, at least for now. Who knows what she really wants? Lamia Pathsways 83 You take the bare path, but it really is empty. After a short walk you rest against a flat stone, and a boppin’ sloth bear comes strolling by. This friendly bear named Baloo cheers you up with a song and playful attitude and you become friends. He teaches you all about Hakuna Matata—wait, that’s Africa, not India. Bagheera comes back, but Baloo says you can stay in the jungle. You have a day of exciting and musical adventures, meeting monkeys and a rhino and—wait, no, the rhino was cut, never mind. When evening comes you’re ready to rest for another exciting day tomorrow. Or are you? Bagheera looked like he was anxious to discuss something with Baloo, and they cross behind a big tree while they think you’re asleep. Do you follow to eavesdrop? –131 No, just get some sleep. You shouldn’t listen in on others’ conversation. -132 Eavesdrop on them! Maybe they’re discussing Jungle Secrets. (unfinished) -133 Eavesdrop on them, but wait!
