🌏 Bull-headed shrike (Lanius bucephalus) The bull-headed shrike is a medium-sized bird (19-20 cm) with a robust build. Males (pictured) have a rufous crown, black mask, grey-brown back, dark wings with a white patch, and rufous flanks. Females are duller with a brown mask and no white wing-patch. It breeds in Northeast China, Korea, Japan, and far-eastern Russia. Northern populations migrate south for winter. This shrike prefers open habitats like farmland and woodland edges. It's a "sit-and-wait" predator, perching prominently to hunt insects, lizards, and crustaceans. Known as "butcher birds," they impale prey on thorns or barbed wire for storage or easier consumption. They also use food caches to attract mates. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) 📷: Photo by Takashi_Yanagisawa via Pixabay https://pixabay.com/photos/wild-animals-bird-natural-outdoors-3262980/ UUEV
