FYI - a couple more #LargeAsphaltRepair #MeasureHLA appeals have been filed - post updated. So far LAR appeals on Eagle Rock, La Brea, Western, Nordhoff, and Vermont. (I personally filed the Vermont challenge) labikas.wordpress.com/2026/03/01/s...
Here's my #largeasphaltrepair post where I recapped that exchange la.streetsblog.org/2026/02/17/u...
The continuing L.A. City #LargeAsphaltRepair saga: in February, four Angelenos submitted #MeasureHLA appeals to the Board of Public Works asserting that "LAR" projects over 660ft long should have triggered HLA upgrades. labikas.wordpress.com/2026/03/01/s...
Why can't L.A. consistently provide working sidewalks/curbs/crosswalks accessible to folks who get around by wheelchair? (Warning: includes more of the wretched #LargeAsphaltRepair saga)

This is #largeasphaltrepair - 2 blocks from La Brea E Line Station
Motion author CD3 Blumenfield sent a rep to testify to Bd of Public Works, he said that Cm Blumenfield’s intention was to make it easier quicker to build bike lanes. CD3 staff was critical of Public Wks #largeasphaltrepair & failures on #MeasureHLA & bike safety
There is not a lot to go on regarding "LAR" #largeasphaltrepair mostly because - since July 1 - the city quietly changed the way they resurface, and the way they report resurfacing (mostly don't report it at all).
My latest look at so-called " #largeasphaltrepair " ...what a mess. The city is leaving cracked/failed asphalt strips in order to not comply with ADA or HLA laws.
SBLA Editor @lintonjoe.bsky.social tries to make sense out of L.A. City repaving vs. " #largeasphaltrepair " which city leaders think gets the city off the hook for installing ADA curb ramps and #MeasureHLA bus/bike/walk/access upgrades la.streetsblog.org/2026/02/17/u...
A few more sad #largeasphaltrepair fail photos (taken years on Roscoe Blvd and Mason Ave) new hashtag #largeasphaltrepairfail
I am astonished how much of LACity Public Works Bureau of Street Services " #LargeAsphaltRepair " street resurfacing is smooth asphalt next to failing cracked asphalt. Feels like professional negligence. Don't city staff workers cringe at this? Make it make sense! Today's "LAR" photo on Hyperion Ave
After being called out (including by @futureis.la and me) for going all-in on expensive inefficient #LargeAsphaltRepair since July 2025, StreetsLA now says "resurfacing... has always been expected to take place later this fiscal year" www.latimes.com/california/s...
Storms combine with the city's expensive inefficient #LargeAsphaltRepair resulting in streets that are crappy for all ktla.com/news/local-n...
On the other hand, it is a La Niña winter - it’s not uncommon for heavy rains to lead to some serious potholes. It’s unusual that the worst of these are on streets that the city “repaired” the month before. Costly inefficient L.A. City #largeasphaltrepair is making existing pavement issues worse.

And in other #LargeAsphaltRepair news: While most of L.A. City gets crappy partial “LAR”, in some well-off hillside neighborhoods (Granada Hills area) #StreetsLA is still doing full resurfacing. Photos of Zelzah Ave and Signature St
Some recent #largeasphaltrepair photos.
I am kind of astonished that the City Public Works Department #StreetsLA Bureau crews are OK with doing such faulty work like this.
LA City Public Works Bureau of Street Services #LargeAsphaltRepair is a cruel joke
Here’s what StreetsLA’s so-called #LargeAsphaltRepair hokum looks like:
Smoke-filled back room:
"You mean this loophole trick will get both the pesky bicyclists and the wheelchair accessibility folks off our backs?"
"Yep - #largeasphaltrepair will put drivers back in the driver's seat!"
I shared this BSS #StreetsLA #largeasphaltrepair photo in a few places. I just noticed that it shows a clear example of how "LAR" skirts ADA law. Check out the lamppost (yellow arrow) in the middle of the sidewalk - blocking wheelchair access.
New LA Podcast - exploring L.A. City #LargeAsphaltRepair scandal - and more. Listen now!
Looking at #largeasphaltrepair it does seem like the city is going out of its way to do a more expensive lower quality resurfacing - Eagle Rock
The tipster didn’t say it, but I expect that the #LargeAsphaltRepair crap makes LADOT striping costs higher too.
#LargeAsphaltRepair is
more expensive than regular resurfacing. Former city employee: “BSS would always tell me that there was such a significant fixed cost of mobilizing paving equipment [so] they wanted long corridors [all] at once & not have to waste time repositioning equipment all the time…”
SBLA's @lintonjoe.bsky.social shares recent reporting on L.A. City's #LargeAsphaltRepair - see photos in the post if you're unfamiliar with "LAR" la.streetsblog.org/2025/12/11/w...
Another wretched thing about the #LargeAsphaltRepair scandal (other being anti-ADA & anti-HLA) is that the Bureau of Street Services is leaving heavily damaged areas where people bike, while resurfacing areas where people drive…futureis.la/p/la-has-stopped-repavin...
This is a different/better version of coverage I had been hoping to write since around September - about the LA City scandal that is #LargeAsphaltRepair. Read this! Share it! Tell your mayor and council to cut this crap. futureis.la/p/la-has-sto...
