Huge thanks to everyone involved at @IMH_UoB & @TheCHBH - a great programme! Here's to all your future work together #LaunchIMHCHBH
Essentially, speaker outlining his research on how the brain processes speech, & how hearing language enables the tracking of neural-network architecture, incl at an individual level, by assessing FMRI reactions caused by entropy & surprise of an unexpected word #LaunchIMHCHBH
Final keynote: Sylvain Baillet, 'A predictive machinery: network dynamics of brain perceptual inferences'.
Opens by considering language & etymology, w a smidgen of #HistPsych #LaunchIMHCHBH
Like this morning, underscoring the importance of individual responses to / ways they shape their environment #LaunchIMHCHBH
Walking thru correlation between biological & environmental risk factors to the development/presentation of antisocial behaviour (using, in part, twin studies, but has previously spoken abt the insights that adoptive children can give to researchers) #LaunchIMHCHBH
Okay, talking abt environmental impact on conduct issues. Harsh & inconsistent discipline might sustain conduct problems; warm *parenting* (not gendered to the motherπ) might be protective. #LaunchIMHCHBH
Right, keynote time; Essie Viding presenting 'Development of psychopathology: how can neurocognitive research improve our understanding of environmental risk', centring on anti-social behaviour #LaunchIMHCHBH
Q. abt how members abt heard abt YAG? College, 'the power of Twitter', UoB msg board, 'Think for Brum', the Birmingham Rep, @heygirldreamer_ & @beatfreeks
#LaunchIMHCHBH
Q. abt how/if YAG connect w other similar groups in the city. One member mentions links w a number of orgs, especially 'Think for Brum', a service-user advisory group #LaunchIMHCHBH
So cool: missed title of the ed collection on child and young ppl's mental health, but @SchrebersSister and Sarah-Jayne Fenton asked the YAG to reshape their book chapter πππππ #LaunchIMHCHBH
Have heard one or two of this group speak before, & they're *great* - immensely switched-on ppl! #LaunchIMHCHBH
Currently waiting for break-out sessions to begin this afternoon's programme. I'm attending this session, delivered by members of @IMH_UoB's Youth Advisory Board #LaunchIMHCHBH
Managed to miss this at #EAHMH2019, but caught it today at #LaunchIMHCHBH - the main lecture theatre at Edgbaston Park Hotel (conference venue) is named after #Quaker, Margery Fry
So their study looked at introducing short, intense burst of activity. The success or otherwise of this was based on maths performance. Hmmm. If MH policy ends up being based on maths-performance data, let's just say I find that a tad problematic #LaunchIMHCHBH
Outlining the opposite end of the aging scale, w a study on exercise in children & young people. Saying that while school PE lessons happen, only abt 25% of time actually spent on physical activity (!) #LaunchIMHCHBH
Talking abt future work needing larger, longer, more scalable studies #LaunchIMHCHBH
Hoorah! Discussion of big data - saying problem w so much data is that everything looks statistically significant. More does not mean better. Theme of this morning for me: re-evaluating & refining the value of different sorts of data #LaunchIMHCHBH
Talking abt the work she & her colleagues have been doing to try to ascertain the accuracy of the hypothesis that physical exercise sustains brain health #LaunchIMHCHBH
Next keynote, Professor Heidi Johansen-Berg: 'Imaging Brain Health through the Lifespan' #LaunchIMHCHBH
Interesting qs around the social vs landscape photos - I'd wondered abt whether older ppl are looking at *exactly* the same images as younger; wd they really want to look at pics of young, non-peers? #LaunchIMHCHBH
Cohorts w collated results show grey matter decreases & white matter increases during adolescence. BUT underscores the individuality of results, which show vast differences - & this is where future work is searching for answers abt susceptibility to MH issues #LaunchIMHCHBH
The Social Brain Network has been studied thru brain scans (not surprisingly), but also PM & animal tissue #LaunchIMHCHBH
Speaking abt public health impact that this influence might have. Gives e.g. of anti-bullying campaigns: in trials peer-led (vs adult-led) campaigns have more positive outcomes #LaunchIMHCHBH
This influence is not always negative - young adolescents are also more likely to be prosocially influenced #LaunchIMHCHBH
Outlining the levels of social influence within different age groups, which diminished w age, but then looked at how much influence young ppl & adults had on different age groups #LaunchIMHCHBH
Currently talking abt risk-taking in adolescence. Pointing out first the likelihood of RTCs when young drivers have passengers, but then also outlining an animal study showing that when young mice are with mates they drink more alcohol #LaunchIMHCHBH
Love this - Blakemore highlighting what has meaning for young people by quoting a diary entry from 1969 #LaunchIMHCHBH
The first keynote of the day is Sarah-Jayne Blakemore @sjblakemore, on 'Sensitive Periods of Social Brain Development in Adolescence' #LaunchIMHCHBH
Ole Jensen of CHBH is currently underscoring the close working relationship btwn the Institute & the Centre; mental health & neurosci #LaunchIMHCHBH
Day 2 of #LaunchIMHCHBH - currently be if introduced to the 2021 'Brain Campus at UoB (where Inst for Mental Health, Centre for Human Brain Health, & Psychology will all share space), & a brief history of how the CHBH was built
