Even before the most recent industry cuts, my inbox has been flooded with urgent flags from peers who are far past their breaking point. These are not just professionals looking for their next career move. These are people who have been out of work for years and are now facing absolute destitution. I am hearing from former developers at top studios who are now: Choosing between critical health needs and basic survival, or even regretting they spent money on expenses to treat illness or to have a surgery. Expressing deep regret over having spent money even for things for their kids because they can't pay their bills Desperately trying to cobble together any form of income just to hold onto the last thread of stability. I never get numb to this. Having so many people write to you saying, "I am at a point of human emergency, please do anything to help me get a job so I can survive," is a weight and embarassment we must all bear and stare at, so I am bringing it to you and will keep doing so with zero apology. They say an industry is only as successful as those experiencing the greatest hardship within it. If that is our metric, we must acknowledge the failure of this crisis. The sheer abundance of these survival level emails has reached a point where it is difficult to even triage them, especially when there are so few open doors to point them toward. Do not lose sight of the human beings behind the numbers. These are our colleagues. This is a crisis of survival for an unmanageable number of people. This is especially true within the Western games scene, which has been the major net loser of the last four years.

Someone should send a book of these stories to Washington. Mass Consolidation led to Mass Studio Closures led to Mass Unemployment. Completely predictable. Preventable with a modicum of regulation. Until these workers are re-employed, we need a safety net that lasts for years. #NoKings #Layoffs
