"Many feared this would be a whitewash. It wasn’t."

I agree.

I do think the review was conducted in good faith by Professor Leng.

With its recommendations, it also recognises the mishandling of the introduction and expansion of these roles by senior leaders.

#LengReview Professor Leng on @BBCr4today says her report “got it right” because both BMA & association for PAs are ‘both unhappy with her report’.
No, that doesn’t follow logically.
The public need to be very clear, always, about whether or not the person they are seeing is, or isn’t, a doctor.

Trying (in vain) to find a link to the #LengReview. If anyone can help, it would be appreciated

Quite some headlines on how things need to change after #LengReview. Thank goodness for everyone who stood up for /had to whistleblow for patient safety, resident doctor training and how the public were being mislead. Review could have gone further but …

When the #LengReview is published next week it will be interesting to see whether there is mention of support (or not) for SAS roles in the discussion around PAs and AAs providing departmental 'continuity'.

Listening to the #LengReview webinars on AAs and Anaesthetists - irrespective of what the views are on the roles themselves, what is obvious is the monumental mess and distress that has been created by introducing unregulated roles relying on local governance for training and progression.

The Dept of Health finally agreed in October to review the safety of PAs - but only after we've raised concerns for years. The #LengReview will report later this year.

Meanwhile, the NHS allows PAs to replace doctors everywhere you look - even on senior registrar on-call rotas in hospital.

No evidence that PAs add value in GP settings, finds academic review There is ‘no evidence’ that physician associates (PAs) add value in GP practices, according to a new academic review.

Such an important & timely piece of research interrogating the evidence base for the safety of physician associates in the NHS. (TL:DR worryingly thin with widespread & significant gaps.)

Thank you, @trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social

Lack of evidence of harm is NOT the same as evidence of safety - as every doctor will tell you.

I dearly hope the #LengReview will take the limitations of the current evidence base on board - because a whitewash would be unforgivable.

🧵/ To inform the #LengReview, Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine @trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social has just published an extraordinarily important rapid review of the available research on PAs & AAs in the UK.

Its key findings appear to be extremely important (& concerning):

Physician Associates and Anaesthetic Associates in the UK: A Rapid Systematic Review of Published Research to Inform the Leng Review <span>This paper describes a systematic literature review of UK-based empirical research on physician associates (PAs) and anaesthetic associates (AAs), publish

Arguably, one of the most important papers on the evidence around physician associates, hot off the press from the irrepressible @trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social:
papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
This ought to be a cornerstone of the #LengReview report

Hey @matthew-wright.bsky.social 👋🏼

I thought @lbc.co.uk listeners might be interested to see this ‘job’ advert for our GP in ED service, framed as a ‘rate increase’!

What plumber or electrician would call for 30mins on a Sunday for £42.50?
