So we went through the whole month of #libellente before I found out that there is in fact one UK species which the Netherlands doesn't have - Southern #Damselfly. I make an annual trip to the New Forest to see them. They are rare in the UK and a protected species. #UKWildlife #invertebrates

#libellente dag 31 deel 4 Ik eindig vandaag met de #mercuurwaterjuffer. Helaas uitgestorven in Nederland, maar ik zag hem in augustus 2025 in Spanje. De ♂♂ hebben een "mercuriushelm" op het tweede segment.

Een prachtige libelle met rode ogen uit de korenbouten familie. Ook bekend onder de Carmine skimmer. Hier een kleurrijke paars/ roze mannetje op een stengel in een modderpoel dus een bruinige achtergrond. Vrouwtjes zijn oranje/ bruin van kleur. Libelle gezien in San Pedro in Ecuador.

#libellente dag31 #VrijeKeuze @libellenjan.bsky.social is een Maanwaterjuffer. Na enige twijfel van mij gaven de paddenstoel op het tweede segment, de kleur en vindplaats de doorslag. De foto rechts is een variabele waterjuffer met een duidelijk lichtere kleur blauw. Bijdrage 2/n 😉

A dragonfly sits on the end of a training ivy stem. It is mainly a pinkish-purple colour, with dark red eyes. It holds its wings outstretched and pointing downwards, a typical pose for this species.
One of my absolute favourite #dragonfly sites is the Villa Ada lake in Rome. The dominant species there is Violet Dropwing, an African species which has spread to southern Europe recently. This one was in October 2019. Beautiful things. #libellente #invertebrates

A large dragonfly hangs from a gorse bush. It is long, thin and black with yellow rings around the abdomen and yellow stripes on the thorax. Its eyes are green.
Another Golden-ringed Dragonfly for #libellente. This one was on Dartmoor on 11 July 2024 while I was looking for butterflies. This rather made up for the lack of butterfly sightings. #dragonfly #UKWildlife #invertebrates

A large black dragonfly with yellow rings around it hangs from a rush leaf. It is very long and thin, with a wider part near the tip of its abdomen. Most of the body has the yellow and black warning colours but its eyes are bright green.
Golden-ringed Dragonfly for #libellente. One of my favourites and the UK's longest species. Most of the photos I have of these are of them say in bushes eating something they've just caught, which is pretty much the only time they sit still. #dragonfly #UKWildlife #invertebtrates

A large, dark green dragonfly clings to needles on a pine tree. Or possibly a spruce. The eyes are a brighter green than the rest of it, which is a very dark green. On the tip of the abdomen are large pincers which are used for grabbing onto the female during mating.
A contribution from Scotland for the last day of #libellente. In the UK Northern Emerald #Dragonfly is only found in the Scottish Highlands and it's not common even there. I've seen it a few times but only have one photo. July 2014 at Beinn Eighe. #UKWildlife #invertebrates

In case you're wondering, yes Dave Smallshire is the same Dave Smallshire who wrote that book on #dragonfly ID that you have on your bookshelf. One of his stories is about a trip together with KD Dijkstra, who wrote the other book. I was hoping for tales of bitter rivalry, but no. #libellente

#libellente dag 31 deel 3 De #kleinetanglibel is zeer zeldzaam in Nederland. Hij komt nog voor in Limburg in ondiepe riviertjes met een grintbodem. In Zuid-Europa zien ze er iets anders uit, daar zijn ze zeer algemeen. Ik zag ze veel in Frankrijk. jankatsman.wordpress...
