Erik Skoglund names the world champion Callum Smith has the best chance to beat Former world title challenger Erik Skoglund has exclusively given WBN his take on Callum Smith’s career revival after the Liverpool puncher’s February win over Joshua Buatsi. Smith, 35, silenced retirement whispers with a commanding performance in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Skoglund — who shared the ring with him in 2017 — believes the super-middleweight champion-turned-light-heavyweight contender has plenty left to offer. Mundo proves doubters wrong “I think Callum was brilliant against Buatsi and showed both skills and hunger, proving he wasn’t done or over the hill,” Skoglund told World Boxing News. “To people who said Callum should have retired, I think he proved them wrong and showed that he can retire when he feels he’s done, not because someone else says so.” The Buatsi victory was Smith’s first marquee win since suffering defeats to Canelo Alvarez and Artur Beterbiev, both elite operators who no boxer should feel down about losing against. How Smith matches up with the elite Asked whether Smith could topple the likes of David Benavidez, Artur Beterbiev, or Dmitry Bivol, Skoglund offered a measured breakdown. “Yes, I do,” he said. “I mean, Callum did fall short against Beterbiev, and as we know, styles make fights. Beterbiev was too strong, and as I see it, you need to have a better jab to stick and move more easily to avoid Beterbiev’s power. “Callum doesn’t fight that way. He is a great fighter, but he trusts his power too much, and he didn’t have the footwork you’d need to pinpoint Beterbiev. It was pretty much the same against Canelo. “I think he’d have better chances to defeat a great boxer like Bivol.” The Road Ahead Smith proved to be Skoglund’s last bout after the Swede suffered serious injuries in the bout that forced him to retire. However, the 34-year-old has kept a keen eye on the sport and trains regularly in the hope that one day he might be able to compete again, even in an exhibition capacity. Skoglund’s comments on Smith echo the sentiment of many fans who felt Mundo’s win over Buatsi signaled a second wind in a career once thought to be fading. With WBC champion Benavidez set to continue his own light-heavyweight run against Smith’s compatriot Anthony Yarde in November and Bivol holding the rest of the belts, Smith remains in the mix at the top level. Whether he can adjust his style against world champions who thrive on movement and precision remains to be seen, but as Skoglund insists, retirement is not on the agenda just yet. Ali could appeal to #TripleH, saying that for the best promotion in the world NOT to have a #Cruiserweight or #LightHeavyweight champion is a travesty. He can politic and make the case to #HHH, #NickAldis, #AdamPearce, & #Ava that HE can bring it back better than ever.
