The image shows the deep greens of trees, sloping upward on grandfather Mountain across the width of the picture. On the mountain, the S shape of the Linn Cove Viaduct curves around the mountain. Medium grey to white rock is mounded in front of the viewer with green vegetation on either side, and the right corner is anchored with another large piece of rock. Gray clouds are in the upper portion of the picture with one white section slightly offset to the left of center. From this white section a segment of rainbow curves from the cloud to the ground. A fainter rainbow segment curves from the cloud to the ground to the left of the brighter rainbow.

Gray cement, the width of two lines of traffic curves overhead. The concrete spans the top of the picture, curving toward the right and then turning left. A supporting pillar can be seen center of picture mainly hidden by deciduous trees growing under the concrete span. The concrete does not touch the mountain to the left. The gray rock of the mountain can be seen to the left of the concrete span with deciduous vegetation growing on it. A low rock is in the front left foreground of the picture.
