Building material choices are: Climate choices, health choices, and justice choices. For nearly 20 years, Living Future has played a critical role in advancing transparency and accountability in the materials space. Here’s where we started, how far we’ve come, and how you can help shape what’s next.
We demanded transparency. Red List launches in 2006: A definitive guide calling out harmful chemicals in building products. Declare is introduced in 2012: A “nutrition label” for building products, revealing ingredients down to 100 ppm. Living Product Challenge debuts in 2014: A regenerative certification for products that are healthy, ethical, and climate-positive.
Transparency gained ground. By the late 2010s, major systems like LEED and WELL recognized Declare and the LPC. In the 2020s, firms began holistically evaluating materials for health, climate, and equity impacts. Now, it’s time to take the next leap forward.
