What are the long-term implications of ’One Big Beautiful Bill’ Investing.com -- In a note to clients Wednesday, Wolfe Research told investors that it expects the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB) to boost growth in the near term but weigh on the U.S. economy over the longer horizon. “We see a net boost to growth in 2025 and 2026 before it becomes a growing drag on GDP,” the firm wrote. The firm explains that the bill’s design is front-loaded on stimulus, with spending cuts phased in over time. Wolfe’s policy team projects a combined $122 billion of stimulus in 2025 and $277 billion in 2026, translating into a 0.1% boost to GDP in 2025 and 0.4% in 2026. However, “tariff headwinds” are expected to subtract 60 basis points from GDP in 2025 and 10 basis points in 2026, leaving a net effect of -50 basis points in 2025 and +30 basis points in 2026. Wolfe said, “Stimulus from the individual tax cuts should start to have an impact in the coming months,” as withholding tables adjust and retroactive corporate tax cuts begin to affect quarterly payments. Over the long term, Wolfe projects a drag of 26 basis points to GDP, despite more optimistic estimates from the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), which sees a 2.4% to 2.7% boost to GDP by 2034. “This is a clear outlier… which we are quite skeptical of,” Wolfe said. Wolfe estimates the bill will add $3.4 trillion to the deficit versus current law, with dynamic estimates factoring in higher interest rates and output. Still, compared to current policy, “it’s only modestly worse for the deficit,” Wolfe noted, as much of the cost reflects extensions of the 2017 tax cuts that were widely expected.
