With #LordsReform in the news, a plug for my recent @politicalquarterly.bsky.social article on an area where reform has previously been proposed - to make the Lords a chamber of the nations & regions - and the extent to which the upper House already functions as a territorial chamber #devolution
300 peers, ⅓ elected proportionally every two years on six year terms. Done.

oN Dr Jamie Gallagher @jamiebgall.co.uk - 5h { Starmer campaigned on Lords reform. It would be the easiest thing in the world to make peerage removal an option for conduct breeches. Recently: Duke of York, Lord Mandelson, Baroness Mone, Earl of Shrewsbury Nazir Ahmed even went to prison for the sexual assault of children. He is till a Baron. =] =19 O29 @ & ao
Would be an easy win with the Public but "fuck those wankers" Labour thinks...

Fifteen peers claimed a total of £585,985 in allowances and expenses during the last parliament despite not speaking or doing other committee work. Only three of the 15 sent a written question to the government over the period. All but one voted during the parliament, on average taking part in a third of voting days. The figures cover the 2019 parliament, which sat until the summer of last year, and exclude peers who had been appointed for fewer than 50 sitting days by the end of the parliament. Just 10% of lords made more than half of all debate contributions. Removing the quietest half of peers would have had little impact on the numbers contributing to debates but would have reduced the allowances and expenses bill by 28%, the analysis suggests.

#Tory peers delay the abolition of hereditary peers to allow them more time to find new jobs. A few questions. 1) Where were they when Maggie closed the pits? 2) How many of these hereditary peers need to work for a living? 3) What is it they hate about meritocracy?

I think one way of reforming the House of Lords and ending the outrageous gifting of life time peerages would be to introduced weekly, televised round table banishments a-la #TheTraitors #LordsReform #Banishing
Unfortunately, I think Ben Ansell has hit the nail on the head of the elephant in the corner here. Nobody will thank Labour for dithering open.substack.com/pub/benansel... #socialcarereform #Lordsreform #housingreform #watercompanies #railnationalisation

Headline, The Independent, 6 December 2024, accompanied by a photo of the outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, speaking in the House of Lords. Headline reads "Senior clergy accuses outgoing Archbishop Justin Welby of 'making light' of abuse victims in speech". Welby has resigned following the publication of an independent report that concluded he could have helped bring the child abuser and rapist John Smyth to justice. In the upper house of the British Parliament, 26 seats are given to bishops and archbishops of the Church of England.
Get the bishops out of our legislature *now*. #lordsreform #HouseofLords #democracy
