Spread from a book with a close-up of some hand-painted Khmer lettering on the left page and three evolving pictures of a book cover design on the right with the title — "Creating the Cover” — and the following text: "Sign painter Sai Sokheang was briefed with a picture of an empty square and the required text from which he prepared an initial sketch. Feedback on the illustration and letter sizes led to the colour sketch. Comments on this in faltering Khmer and sign language were then sufficient for him to start work on the finished piece. This consists of a polystyrene board with a brushed background and lettering applied in oil paint. Overleaf are photos of Sokheang at work and some of his tools of the trade."

The big 'lost in translation' moment was concerning the first pencil sketch where I wanted to convey that the hand should be holding a paintbrush, not a pencil.
