With 6 days to go until the official #astronomical arrival of #Spring, I thought I’d post a #photo I took last spring in #Peter #Lougheed Provincial #Park, in #Alberta 🇨🇦, near the B.C. border. Blue sky and the #Rocky #Mountains reflected in a #lake. Going back soon. 🙂

Title: Alberta’s Constitutional Showdown: The Guardian vs. The Autocrat (1972–2026).
.
Row 1: The Vision vs. The Practice

Lougheed (Legislative Protection): Passed the Alberta Bill of Rights (1972) to fulfill the government’s obligation to protect citizens from state overreach.

Smith (The Rights Override): Bill 9 (2025) used the Notwithstanding Clause (NWC) to suspend Bill of Rights protections for trans youth and gender-affirming healthcare.

Row 2: Disability Rights vs. The ADAP Replacement

Lougheed (Created AISH, 1979): Established Canada’s first legislated disability income program, moving support out of the discretionary welfare system.

Smith (Cuts & Clawbacks, 2026): Replacing AISH with ADAP (Bill 12) to cut monthly benefits, force re-adjudication, and claw back federal disability funds from the most vulnerable.

Row 3: Ending the Harm vs. Rights Suspension

Lougheed (Ending Eugenics): Repealed the Sexual Sterilization Act (1972) to stop the violation of fundamental human rights and government power over the body.

Smith (The Strike Breaker): Used the NWC in the 2025 Back to School Act to suspend fundamental human rights and force teachers to work against their will.

Row 4: Local Democracy vs. Centralized Control

Lougheed (Decentralized Power): Empowered local boards and cities to act as a democratic check, keeping power away from a centralized provincial office.

Smith (The Power Grab): Passed Bill 20 and Bill 31 to seize control of local elections and grant Cabinet the power to fire elected officials.

The Final Verdict: A bold quote at the bottom reads: "Peter Lougheed used the law to protect Albertans from the government. Danielle Smith is using the law to protect the government from Albertans."

Sources listed at bottom: Alta. Bill of Rights (1972); AISH Act (1979); Sexual Sterilization Repeal (1972); Bills 9, 12, 20, 31 (2024-26); Back to School Act (2025).

Peter Lougheed used the law to protect Albertans from the government. Danielle Smith is using it to protect her government from Albertans.

From the Bill of Rights to the NWC, the UCP has reversed 50 years of progress.

2/5 #Judges did not seize power like a mafia. They were invited.

#Diefenbaker enacted the Bill of Rights. #Lougheed helped craft the Charter.

Taken yesterday morning. This is #Upper #Kananaskis #Lake, located in #Peter #Lougheed #Park in the #Rocky #Mountains of #Alberta #Canada 🇨🇦. Located 90 minutes SW of #Calgary, many visit during the summer but at 10am Saturday there were few people around.

I took this shot of some of the #Rocky #Mountains near the #Alberta - British Columbia border in #Peter #Lougheed Park last Saturday. There is still #snow on them but the fields have almost none and are beginning to thrive.
Have a great Friday everyone! 🙂 #photography #landscape #nature #spring

Taken Saturday at #Peter #Lougheed #Park in #Kananaskis Country, near the #Alberta border with British Columbia. Some #Rocky #Mountains have lost much of their winter snow and are seen here reflected in #Upper Kananaskis #Lake, which has lost most of its ice. #photography #nature #wilderness #spring

No thank you Mayor Mike. Your job of attracting people to Burnaby is way overdone with condo-tower central happening at #Brentwood & #Lougheed. You invited way more people than current infrastructure can remotely handle & residents are suffocating because of it. #Burnaby #MayorMikeHurley #bcpoli

#Lougheed & #Klein understood it's insanity to poison our drinking water. #DanielleSmith and her #UCP either doesn't or just doesn't care. They must be stopped.
