JUST THE CUTEST & BRAVEST!
With their puffball bodies and teeny-tiny stilt legs, plover chicks are the cutest critters on earth. Plover chicks aren't fed by their parents, they leave the nest when they hatch and look for their own food!
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
Beach bums!
Most plovers worldwide are synonymous with beachfront, coastal or wetland environments. Take our #beachnestingbirds, all they want is to hang out on the beach & live peacefully without disturbance. Who can’t relate?

Frequent flyer superstars!
Many migratory plovers feed and rest in the southern hemisphere during the austral summer, fly back up the northern hemisphere to lay eggs during June and July and then back down again all within the year!

BEST PARENTS!
Don’t let their simple nests fool you, plovers are great parents! Take #MaskedLapwings! Their screeching help scare away potential threats (including us) and tells their babies it’s time to get down low and hide from the danger.
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
Cunning and clever!
Part of the reason plovers are great parents is that they are masters of bluffing. Broken wing displays allow parents to look like easy meals to keep predators away from their chicks.

Why do we #LoveAPlover? Find out some of our reasons in this thread! But this is not an exhaustive list! We sure have many more reasons! Do you?
#PloverAppreciationDay
Little Ringed Plover breeds far north of Africa
through Europe and Asia. In the austral summer, these plovers migrate to Africa, southern and south-eastern
Asia. It's also a rare but regular non-breeding migrant to tropical NT and northern WA.
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
Oriental Plover breeds breeds in Central Asia and migrates to northern and central Australia. While in Australia, this species prefers inland and semi arid habitats, but may also be found on the coast.
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
Grey Plover – monochromatic cousin of the Pacific Golden Plover, also breeds in Arctic regions. Regular summer migrant to Australia's south and west coasts. Almost all the migrants to Australia are ♀️, and we aren’t sure why!

Pacific Golden Plover - striking and distinct when in breeding plumage, like the other migrants, it usually appears on our shores in their plainer non-breeding plumage. They breed all the way up in Alaska. Up to 27,000 km round trip!

Lesser Sand Plover - very similar to Greater Sand Plover, but is generally smaller and has a shorter bill. Breeds in Mongolia and Siberia and spends the austral summer in sheltered coastal habitats of Australia.
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
Greater Sand Plover breeds in Central Asia. They arrive to Australia in late August, where you can find them in tidal flats with sandy substrates along the coastline, but not common in southern Australia.
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
Double-banded plover – our winter visitor from NZ. Found in to southern and eastern Australia, in coastal mudflats, intertidal zones, wetlands and wet pastures and flies back to breeding grounds in NZ at the end of August.
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
#AussiePlovers thread for #PloverAppreciationDay! Migration champions! These plovers spend their non-breeding season in AUS feeding to get energy for their really long trip to breeding grounds in the tundra or NZ! Habitat loss along their flyway is threatening them.
#LoveAPlover
Great thread about #MaskedLapwings! Because they deserve to be understood and loved too!

We LOVE this! Thank you @ParrotOfTheDay!
Can you guess both species, the plover AND the parrot?
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
Last but not least, Inland Dotterel! As the name suggests, instead of the coast, this plover is found in Australia’s arid interior zones in flat and sparsely vegetated plains where they forage for seeds, leaves and insects, usually at night.
#PloverAppreciationDay #LoveAPlover
Black-fronted Dotterel – a distinctive small plover with bold black markings on the face and chest. This species is found all across Australia and prefers freshwater habitats like wetlands, rivers and dams.

Red-kneed Dotterel - the only representative of their genus. Very elegant resident of freshwater wetlands across AUS. Nope, they don’t have red knees! They have pinkish long legs and a distinctive black cap.

Red-capped Plover – Small & active, the most common and widespread of Australia’s #beachnestingbirds. Found in a variety of fresh and salt-water habitats all across AUS. ♂️ with bold rufous-coloured cap which give them their name.
