On approach, from west, to the Black Rock, the smaller jagged outcrop from the above post to the left. Darker ripples on the surface separate the grey sea from the grey sky. The fog presenting the looming Black Rock as a dark grey mass on the horizon. There’s a tunnel accessible by kayak from the eastern side. Just beyond the western opening are more rocks. If you had to you could haul your kayak over them, but there’s plenty of room to turn around. Though there’s plenty of headroom, at times the rise of the swell through can easily reach a meter or more. You’ll sometimes find a seal or two in here. And they can give you as big a fright as you give them. I enjoy these conditions for a kayak, but not without some knowledge of place, tides, currents and weather conditions, bail out points and sea safety best practices. They’re disorienting and calming both physically and sensory. No matter my own experiences and training (inshore rescue), if my instincts say no, I don’t go.
