A three-quarter length portrait of a balding, smiling seated man. His remaining hair is dark; he wears a salt-and-pepper beard and a fur-trimmed, dark blue robe. In his left hand he holds the top of a staff with a snake wrapping around it, presumably a reference to his role as a physician.
