Part of the raised expressway that passes through Kobe lies collapsed with a lorry tossed to the ground after the Great Hanshin Earthquake.
A portion of the harbor damaged by the Great Hanshin Earthquake is preserved as memorial in Kobe Harborland.
Although a festive celebration, the Luminarie is also a memorial to those that lost their lives in the Great Hanshin Earthquake.
Silent prayers are said to the dead as part of the opening ceremony, and their names are posted as part of a longer memorial event the same evening.
