“Description
Eastern Javanese, Majapahit Dynasty, Ca 15th Century AD. Red clay figure of corpulent form, with large, hollow belly; incised with decorative details. Exudes a lively, robust personality. The long tradition of trade between China and Java culminated with the establishment of a trading colony in 1297. The Chinese were subsequently responsible for the first regular use of coins in Java which became widespread in the 15th century. During the 14th and 15th centuries, large numbers of terra-cotta animals were made, all provided with a slot on the back for insertion of copper coinage. Pigs were particularly popular because of their association with prosperity and were modeled with great care. 11"L x 8-3/8"H.”

#NationalPigDay 🐖🐷:
Plump terracotta “piggy banks” (modeled after Javanese Wild Boars) were popular in 14th-15th c. #Majapahit Empire; many have been recovered, but unbroken ones are rare!
