First stop, the Moon. Next stop, Mars? Why Nasa's mission matters First stop, the Moon. Next stop, Mars? Why Nasa's mission matters 19 minutes ago Rebecca Morelle ,Science editorand Alison Francis ,Senior science journalist In just a few days Nasa is planning to launch the Artemis II mission, sending four astronauts on their way to the Moon. Their voyage around our nearest neighbour will pave the way for a lunar landing and, eventually, a Moon base. Nasa's Artemis programme has taken years of work, involved thousands of people and is estimated to have cost $93bn to date. But for some, there's a distinct feeling of "been there, done that". More than 50 years ago, America's Apollo missions made history when the first people set foot on the lunar surface. With six landings in total, it felt like the Moon had been well and truly ticked off the space to-do list. So why is the US spending so much time, effort and money racing to return? Valuable resources The terrain might look dry, dusty and seems rather barren, but it's far from that. "The Moon has got the same elements in it that we have here on Earth," says Prof Sara Russell, a planetary scientist at the Natural History Museum. "An example...

America's nuclear spacecraft is heading to Mars, and it's bringing helicopters For decades, nuclear propulsion has been a fixture of aerospace engineering proposals and government studies, always promising, never quite leaving the laboratory. That changes in 2028. NASA announced that it will launch a spacecraft called Space Reactor-1 Freedom, described by the agency as the first nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft, on a trajectory to Mars before the end of that year. The mission, called Skyfall, will carry a fleet of small helicopters to the Martian surface. But the helicopters may end up being the secondary headline. The reactor powering the journey could reshape how humanity moves through deep space. The propulsion technology onboard SR-1 Freedom is known as nuclear electric propulsion, or NEP. It operates through an onboard fission reactor that generates heat, which is then converted into electricity to drive highly efficient electric thrusters. This is distinct from the radioisotope thermoelectric generators that have powered instruments aboard probes like Voyager for decades; those systems use the heat from radioactive decay for power but play no role in propulsion. NEP is an active drive system, and unlike solar panels, it functions at any distance from the sun, making it particularly suited for missions heading toward the outer solar system. Three helicopters and...

Rubies on Mars? Rover finds fluorescent gems for 1st time NASA’s Perseverance rover has found tiny gemstones in Martian pebbles. They are composed of corundum. The gems are likely rubies or maybe sapphires, the rover’s analysis suggests. The gems were in a region outside the rim of Jezero Crater. Meteorite impacts likely formed the gems. On Earth, tectonic activity forms these gemstones. Rubies on Mars? NASA’s Perseverance rover has found something never seen before on Mars: fluorescent gems like rubies, or perhaps sapphires. The tiny gem grains are inside pebbles near the rim of Jezero Crater. Ann Ollila at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico led the research team. The researchers said that the gem grains are composed of corundum. On Earth, corundum is also known as the minerals ruby or sapphire. The difference depends on the trace metals inside it. It is also usually associated with tectonic activity. Leah Crane wrote about the new discovery in New Scientist on March 18, 2026. Ollila presented the results at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC 2026) in Texas on March 16, 2026. The two conference papers are available here and here. The Perseverance rover has found tiny crystals that seem to be rubies or sapphires inside pebbles on Mars,...

A mosaic of rust toned images capturing a self-portrait of the Mars rover Spirit.

Over Sols 2016-2018 (Sept. 4-6, 2009) Spirit tipped her Panoramic cameras down to acquire another self portrait. Since the cleaning event around Sol 1976, a layer of dust has accumulated on the solar arrays (see the Sol 1355 and Sol 1976 deckpans for comparison). This and the previous deckpan on 1976 were taken from the same location, as Spirit sat embedded in deep sand at Troy.

The vertical projection used here produces the best view of the rover deck, though it distorts the ground and antennas somewhat. The eight-pointed star shape near the front of the rover (top of the image) marks the location of the camera mast, which is out of view of the Pancam atop the mast. Pancam's 601nm, 535nm and 482nm filters were used in this mosaic.

Read an extract from Kim Stanley Robinson's sci-fi classic Red Mars Mars was empty before we came. That’s not to say that nothing had ever happened. The planet had accreted, melted, roiled and cooled, leaving a surface scarred by enormous geological features: craters, canyons, volcanoes. But all of that happened in mineral unconsciousness, and unobserved. There were no witnesses – except for us, looking from the planet next door, and that only in the last moment of its long history. We are all the consciousness that Mars has ever had. Now everybody knows the history of Mars in the human mind: how for all the generations of prehistory it was one of the chief lights in the sky, because of its redness and fluctuating intensity, and the way it stalled in its wandering course through the stars, and sometimes even reversed direction. It seemed to be saying something with all that. So perhaps it is not surprising that all the oldest names for Mars have a peculiar weight on the tongue – Nirgal, Mangala, Auqakuh, Harmakhis – they sound as if they were even older than the ancient languages we find them in, as if they were fossil words from the Ice Age or before. Yes, for thousands of years Mars...
