Kanyo-ji Temple Garden | John Lander Photography Kanyo-ji Temple Gardens - the temple was founded in the Muromachi period by the Ouchi clan. In the Showa period, Mirei Shigemori created several gardens here, including the Gyokusui Garden, Jizo Yuka Garden, Horaisan Pond Garden, Nine Mountains and Eight Seas Garden, Sogen One Drop Garden and Eight Views Garden, which are considered some of his greatest masterpieces. Kanyo-ji Temple Garden was created between 1970 and 1973. It is a work that Mirei Shigemori created in his later years, follows the concept of "following the forms of Japanese gardens from each era. Sogen Itteki Garden - the stonework in front of the temple gate is quite unusual. This was built after the gardens created in the main hall and shoin study, such as the later Kyokusui Garden. The largest boulder used here, weighing 27 tons, was once a stone that once blocked a national highway due to a landslide caused by a typhoon in 1973, and it is said that it was placed in the garden. The garden style is a Gyokukan-shiki garden, which was often seen in the gardens of military commanders and tea master Ueda Soko during the Momoyama period. The Curved Water Garden - This is the main garden of Kanyo-ji Temple, located in front of the main hall. As its name suggests, it incorporates the garden style of the Heian period, but it is interesting to note that the design is quite different from the Curved Water Garden that Mirei created at Kyoto Matsuo Shrine Gardens.
