Ep311: The "New" Psychology of Happiness Mormonish is joined by Cameron Stringham and Steph to discuss the ideas in the popular book, The Ten Worlds: The New Psychology of Happiness The Ten Worlds: The New Psychology of Happiness argues that most people misunderstand what actually creates lasting happiness. In the book, authors Alex Lickerman and Ash ElDifrawi combine modern psychology with ideas drawn from Buddhist philosophy to explain that our happiness depends primarily on the beliefs we hold about life. They propose that people move through ten psychological “worlds,” or life-conditions, ranging from negative states like Hell, Hunger, Animality, and Anger to more positive ones such as Learning, Realization, and Compassion. Each of the first nine worlds is based on a mistaken belief—or “core delusion”—about what will make us happy, such as thinking happiness comes from getting what we want or avoiding pain. Because these beliefs rely on external conditions, the happiness they produce is fragile and temporary. Mia was born and raised in the LDS church. As a child, she experienced sexual abuse that deeply impacted her mental health and sense of safety. As she struggled with self harm, an eating disorder, and thoughts of ending her life, her bishop referred her to a therapist she was told she could trust. She saw him for nine years. What began as therapy slowly turned into something else. He told her she was being oppressed by a demon and that he needed to help set her free. Over time, the sessions escalated into physical abuse, including suffocation and injury, all under the guise of helping her. Mia saw him daily and was in constant contact with him, believing he was the only one who could help her. Mia eventually told a friend and reported him, beginning a long and painful fight for justice. Her case was later covered by Rolling Stone. Today, Mia has built a safe and healthy life for herself. After everything she endured, she is now in a loving relationship and preparing to get married. Her story is one of survival, truth, and resilience.
