Michigan State's March history a motivator in Elite Eight: 'Not satisfied' Atlanta — It took mere minutes after Friday’s Sweet 16 win over Mississippi for Tom Izzo to remind everyone of his expectations. “We don't put up any banners for Elite Eights,” Izzo said. “We put up banners for championships and Final Fours and national championships.” Izzo and the Spartans take pride in that. The real accomplishment for No. 2 seed Michigan State (30-6) is whether it can get to the Final Four, which would be its 10th appearance in program history. The path there runs through Auburn (31-5), the No. 1 seed in the South Region and a team that spent a lot of the season ranked atop the country. “For us, we’re a historic basketball program,” freshman guard Jase Richardson said Saturday. “So we're not going to take just Sweet 16 finishes or Elite Eight finishes, because we know we can do a lot better than that. I mean, we got a whole bunch of Final Fours, two national championships, so we know that the work's not done. Final Fours is what we want to do. Championships is what we want to do. So it kind of just keeps us all focused.” A lot of programs would be satisfied to be in this position. To be sure, Michigan State realizes what it has accomplished. But the sights are set a little higher — to win the weekend and head to San Antonio’s Final Four. It doesn’t diminish what the Spartans already have accomplished, but rather motivates them for more. “We’re definitely not satisfied,” senior guard and captain Jaden Akins said. “We really feel like we got a chance to do more damage in this tournament, so we’re just trying to take it one game at a time and that’s the game tomorrow.” The effect of setting such a high bar is evident. Despite building a strong program with a four-year streak of NCAA Tournament appearances, this year is the first time Auburn has made it into the second weekend of the tournament. Whereas Tigers forward Johni Broome has won four NCAA Tournament games in his three years since transferring to Auburn, Akins has won seven, including two runs to the Sweet 16 or deeper in his four years with Michigan State. Though a freshman, Richardson got the inside scoop from his dad, Jason Richardson, a member of Izzo’s national championship team in 2000. He told him winning is what we’re supposed to do. It’s a message that stuck with Jase through the season. Like in early February, when three losses in four games threw off the Spartans after a 13-game win streak. “I was kind of satisfied with how the season was going for us,” Richardson said. “But then we took a couple tough losses, and then, once again, when we came off those couple losses, I think we all reminded ourselves that we're a basketball school. We're supposed to be winning these games. We're supposed to be contending for Big Ten championships. That's what we're supposed to do.” Michigan State rallied to an eight-game win streak, six against ranked opponents, that vaulted it to a Big Ten championship and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.  Now, the Spartans enter this game as an underdog. Auburn is a 5½-point favorite, with a rowdy crowd packing State Farm Center. While the Spartans compete for their 11th Final Four in school history and ninth under Izzo, Auburn is fighting to make just its second in school history (2019). “I'm not going to let Michigan State play the underdog card even though we're No. 1 seed and they're No. 2 seed. No, they're Michigan State,” Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said Saturday. “They're Kansas, they're Duke, they're North Carolina, and we're Auburn. We know our place. We know what we're trying to go up against, and we know the uphill battle that it is when you play against a Hall of Fame coach and obviously a legendary program.” A blueblood that expects to be in this position, versus a program that’s only recently found elite form. “I don't know what's an underdog,” Izzo said. “You get to this point, and there are no underdogs. If (Pearl) wants to make us a favorite, I'm cool with that. If he wants to make us an underdog, I've been in that role before, too.” Underdog or not, Michigan State expects to win in these types of games. It’s one of the ways Izzo’s program has differentiated itself as an NCAA Tournament powerhouse. It’s an expectation that is motivating his team, one win away from the Final Four.
