Rio Yokota of Institute of Science Tokyo (new name for Titech) giving an update on #LLM work using #supercomputers in Japan at #MW25NZ mixed with an excellent overall discussion of wider international #AI evolution and advances

The problem with Seymour Cray’s infamous quote “would you rather have two oxen or 1000 chickens to plough a field” is that he failed to take into account that the 1000 would grow to a million chickens.

Fascinating talk by Jeffrey Vetter of ORNL on the potential of using #AI to port #HPC codes to new platforms or to generate HPC code. Some surprisingly good results (eg competitive to vendor tuned BLAS libs) but still plenty of work to go yet.

Good talk by Sunita Chandrasekaran (@sunitachandra.bsky.social) on optimising science capability with #AI using the example of improving simulations of instabilities in plasma by introducing #ML into the workflow with benefits including helping reduce data volumes

#AI is driving computer architecture development
Adapt or die might be the only option for the #HPC community
• GPUs, lower precision, tensor cores, smaller memories etc

My talk yesterday addressed Hyperion's question when/if a #hyperscaler will take #1 spot on #Top500 - likely with an #ai #supercomputer ...
I did answer the question but the audience aren't allowed to share my answer!
You have to be at #MW25NZ to hear such things :-)

Proposing a specification for running HPC benchmarks - benchpark - to help automation, reuse, reproducibility, tracking, etc.
Kate Keahey from Argonne talking about Edge Infrastructures for #AI research - building scientific instruments using combinations of edge and #cloud
