A close-up underwater photograph captures a male argonaut, a rarely seen pelagic octopus species, resting within the transparent body of a siphonophore, a colonial gelatinous organism. The argonaut is small and strikingly vibrant, with a deep orange-red, scaly-looking mantle and dark, expressive eyes. Tiny suckers are visible beneath its head. Its soft body contrasts sharply against the ghostly, flowing tendrils of the siphonophore, which appear almost like drifting silk in dark ocean water. The surreal setting gives a sense of floating in the deep sea, highlighting the fragile, rarely witnessed interactions of open-ocean creatures. The image is credited to Gregory Rothman, 2024, in orange text at the lower left.
A male argonaut, sometimes referred to as a paper nautilus. There’s a massive sexual dimorphism. The females can be 600 times more massive. This little guy’s good to go. “Come on baby! Please baby, PLEASE!!!”

Figured my first post needed to be a beautiful shot of the tide pools along the Oregon Coast I get to live on.
