It's been about 20 years since I got to play in an amazing #MageTheAwakening campaign/one-shot. It was set in Chicago during the World's Fair in 1933 and, honestly, I thought I had come up with an interesting idea. I created a psychologist/psychiatrist focusing on Mind spells to aid in his work.

I am beginning to REALLY warm to Mage: The Awakening 2E given how hard it leans into "weird horror" as a genre. Like, in Mage 1E, you were really just a Dude Who Could Do Magic. In 2E, you are also a Dude Who Constantly Experiences Visions Of A Higher World And Cannot Turn Them Off #MageTheAwakening
I had visitors, too – a fuckload of them. They used a lot more Proper Nouns: Council, Assembly, Ladder, Adamantine Arrow, Mysterium. I asked for a notebook, and they gave me one, so I started writing names down when I heard them – and on the rare occasions when someone would give me a straight answer, what those names meant. Some of them just wanted to see if I was doing okay. Others kinda just seemed to be around to look at me, like I was some animal in a zoo – or asked questions, endless questions. Some wanted to talk to me, or at me. For a week, I was the main attraction for every Mage in Chicago, and it seemed like everyone wanted a ride. It was about then I realized I had power – just a little. See, I figured out two things about Mages real fast.
Mage Fact #1: Mages fucking love to talk. You get a Mage in a room with anything that can hear him – or fuck, that he even thinks can hear him – he’ll talk for hours. Pet theories, political views, grudges, baseball trivia, whatever. Mages are giant wasp nests full of words and it only takes the lightest touch to get us motherfuckers buzzing like a broken fridge. Mage Fact #2: Mages fucking love to patronize. If a Mage thinks you’re dumber than he is, nothing will get his dick harder than the thought that he might dispel your quaint ignorance. So, I did the smart thing: played dumb. I acted the poor, bewildered fish, terrified by this hellish new world, confused by all this new slang. Please, sir, can’t you explain to a poor jailbird what’s going on? I wake up every day and there’s new faces and I’m so stressed out. What’s a Consilium? Who’s a Guardian? How do you spell “Magisterium?”

I sigh. “Look, I get what you’re doing, okay? You’re trying to make a point. Magic.” I pause. “Sorry. I’m a mage? I’m doing magic? It just sounds so… fuckin’ dumb to say.” He gives me that exasperated look again, the one you use when you’re arguing with a child. “Regardless of your feelings on the exact terminology, Mr. Callahan, magic presses against the skin of the world like something sharp. Used with due care and attention, it is a needle – precise, exacting, limited in its scope. Employed injudiciously, it’s rather more like a stab wound. What you’ve been doing is somewhat akin to…” He cups his chin. “Well, if we’re to play out our current metaphor to its conclusion, you’ve been swinging a machete in a crowded room.”
