The job of Majordomo to the Emperor was extremely responsible and well remunerated, therefore highly desired. One of the most important tasks of the Majordomo was to manage all the wannabe Majordomos and keep them from pitching to the Emperor - if they failed, with Darwinian logic the job would immediately go to the person who outwitted them. This tended to reward cunning, persistence and chutzpah, none of which were particularly useful in being Majordomo which was mostly about managing budgets and attention to detail. So inevitably Majordomo quality declined over time, eventually leading to the total ruin of the empire. #BubbleDrabbles
