Statistics Canada just dropped a bombshell report on Long Covid. This is the most important figure. It highlights that the risk of long-term symptoms is cumulative It increases with each number of infections. By 3+ infections, 38% report long-term symptoms — that's 1 in every 2.6 people. The percentage of adults experiencing long-term symptoms increased with the number of COVID-19 infections reported 1 infection 14.6% risk of getting Long Covid 2 infections. 25,4% risk of getting Long Covid 3 or more infections. 38% risk of getting Long Covid The percentage of adults experiencing long-term symptoms increased with the number of COVID-19 infections reported The potential impact of re-infections on the risk of developing or exacerbating pre-existing long-term symptoms is important considering the endemic nature of COVID-19. However, studies providing evidence of increased risk are limited in number and generalizability. As seen in Chart 2, Canadians reporting two known or suspected COVID-19 infections (25.4%) were 1.7 times more likely to report prolonged symptoms than those reporting only one known or suspected infection (14.6%), and those with 3 or more infections (37.9%) 2.6 times more likely.
About 3.5 million Canadian adults reported experiencing long-term symptoms following a COVID-19 infection 2.1 million reported they were still experiencing those symptoms as of June 2023. Almost half of those still experiencing symptoms reported they had not seen any improvement in symptoms over time. Pie chart illustrating symptom resolution among Canadian adults with long-term symptoms as of June 2023. The chart shows 58.2% continue to experience symptoms, with 42.2% ongoing for a year or more. A smaller section (41.8%) reported symptom resolution. Data source: Statistics Canada, Canadian COVID-19 Antibody and Health Survey, June 2023.
