So now we're stuck with an imperfect approach to critical issue, and, I hope, an understanding that if it fails the legislature will take all the wrong lessons from it. It needs to pass, because this is literally the best we're getting and the only way we're getting it. 4/4 #mapoli

The problem is, we've tried for years to do this the "right" way and the legislature has flatly refused to move on it, despite the intendifying housing crisis. The lack of urgency from our electeds, except around things they can score cheap virtue signal points for, forced our hands. 3/4 #mapoli

Ballot initiatives are a nuclear option and, in my opinion, the worst possible way to pass legislation. Why? They lack nuance. Someone who wants rent control but hates this proposal can't lobby to change specific provisions. We have a binary choice: "this specific language or nothing". 2/4 #mapoli

Tangential to this point, it is also a "must pass", so some people who don't support all of it will vote because of the consequencesof failure. Namely, the legislature saying "see, people don't actually want rent control. Sitting on our hands was the correct choice. 1/4 #mapoli
