Hilda taps her finger against the gift box in her hand, more nervous about it than she would have anticipated. She can't remember the last time she hesitated like this outside Marianne's room… probably one of those times before the war when she heard Marianne crying through the door. Ugh, this isn't like her! Hilda breathes deep, a hand on her stomach. One second later, she knocks lightly on Marianne's door, still anxiously fidgeting with the box behind her back. It doesn't take long for Marianne to open the door, her neutral expression quickly brightening as soon as she sees Hilda. That never gets old. Hilda returns her smile and lets herself in. Marianne happily steps aside, closing the door behind her. "Hilda… it's good to see you." As much time as they try to make for each other, the end of the war has only meant more time apart. Plenty of the Golden Deer and their allies have moved on over the last few months since the destruction of Nemesis and Those Who Slither in the Dark, but not them. Yet.
"You too, babe! Actually… here, sit!" Hilda plops down on Marianne's carefully made bed, patting spot next to her. Marianne giggles, sitting down with a bit less aplomb than her girlfriend. Before she can say anything, Hilda slides the gift box into her view, a simple white box with a baby blue ribbon. "Happy birthday, Marianne!" Marianne grabs the box with two hands, carefully holding it over her lap. "Thank you… but you didn't have to-" "I know I didn't!" Hilda assures her. "I wanted to. Open it!" Marianne nods her head, smiling. Her fingers tug at the ribbon, letting it fall to her lap. A nail slips under the lid of box and soon enough, Marianne can see her gift. A beautiful necklace. A heart-shaped pendant, half-pink, half-blue, on a thin string. The symbolism is obvious, leaving Marianne speechless. She holds it carefully in a hand, smiling as she gazes at it.
"I, um, wanted it to represent us." Hilda starts, uncharacteristically anxious, but perhaps that's only expected, with such a personal, intimately-crafted gift. "Just in case our paths draw us apart or just to have it… I wanted it to remind you of us. It's-" A sniffle, and Marianne's hand trembles. "…Marianne?" Hilda can feel herself tremble along with it. Instead of trembling again, Marianne's grip tightens, clasping the pendant tight in her hand and she pulls it to her chest. Her gaze turns toward Hilda, and even as a tear falls down her face, Hilda can see her smile. "I love it." It's a miracle she kept her words steady. "I'm so glad! I knew I didn't have anything to worry about." Hilda says, her own eyes tearing up just a bit. She wraps an arm around Marianne's back, pulling her head in to rest against Hilda's chest. "Hilda… I don't ever… want us to draw apart, okay?" She almost manages another miracle. "…I wouldn't dream of it, Marianne. I love you." "I love you, too."
