Marie Nordlinger (1876–1961): Proust’s Muse from Manchester by Cynthia Gamble traces the life of the Manchester‑born artist, linguist and close friend of Marcel Proust. Nordlinger assisted him with translating Ruskin’s The Bible of Amiens and Sesame and Lilies, and their long correspondence reveals her influence on his work. Trained in Manchester and Paris, she worked as a sculptor, joined Siegfried Bing’s gallery, and was even sent alone to the US to negotiate art contracts. Her life was marked by upheaval: marriage to art historian Rudolf Meyer‑Riefstahl, exile and financial loss during WWI, and the later death of her son in WWII. A resilient, pioneering figure, she remained devoted to Franco‑British cultural exchange and was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1957.
