“Heathen” by Markus Klinko, 2001

The Art Scoop: Black-and-white portrait of David Bowie facing forward, his eyes rendered pale and sightless. Shot during Markus Klinko’s New York session for the Heathen album cover, the image presents Bowie as a blind figure, symbolising a loss of belief in religion, politics, and imposed systems, with a controlled, deliberate composition influenced by Man Ray.

“David Bowie, The Heavens (B&W)” by Markus Klinko, 2001

Series: Bowie Unseen

Arty-Fact: When asked about his first encounter with David Bowie:

"I remember it very well, like it was yesterday. I was surprised..I didn’t expect to meet him. Iman brought him along for a book editing session. I photographed her for the cover of her book, 'I am Iman', in 2001. He came up the stairs, I didn’t know he was coming. He was very lively, friendly and super charismatic, as one would expect. I was giddy and excited that he was there. I wasn’t prepared. Once he looked at Iman’s edits, he seemed impressed. Then he asked me flat out: 'Do you want to shoot my next album cover?' It was a series of unexpected events. He was clearly polite, open, talkative, a very smart and nice guy."

“David Bowie, The Studio (B&W)” by Markus, 2001

Series: Bowie Unseen

Arty-Fact: This stunning shot of David Bowie is from Markus' photo session for the cover of "Heathen", released in 2002.

"[David] is one of the very few celebrities that I have worked with who personally got involved, and was extremely communicative and very hands-on in the process. He asked if I could come over to a Broadway recording studio and listen to some tracks. I went over the next day. I wandered around the old, understated recording studio to find Bowie and his producer, Tony Visconti, in one of the rooms. Bowie said that wanted to play some of the new songs for me before discussing the album art. The mental image of Bowie sitting by a window, smoking cigarettes while his producer played the rough mixes from the board, is a memory that I could never forget. After listening to almost the entire album together, we started talking about the shoot. He had many ideas and was very precise about them." ~ Markus Klinko

The heavens aren’t celestial - they’re conceptual. In photographs shaped by restraint, belief undone, and deliberate distance, Markus Klinko captures David Bowie at a rare altitude: quiet, controlled, and held.

Maybe this isn’t spectacle. Maybe it’s restraint.

Arty-Fact: “One thing my mother always instilled in me is to always know my worth. Don't settle for less. She used to say to me 'Iman, no is a complete sentence, learn to say no. You don't have to explain it you don't have to say anything after it. It's a complete sentence.' So when I came to America 1975, I found out that the black models were being paid less than white models. So the first thing I did was say I'm not going to do the job unless I'm paid the same amount.” ~ Iman

"I believe in glamour. I am in favor of a little vanity. I don’t rely on just my genes. Looking good is a commitment to yourself and to others … whatever works for you, honey.” ~ Iman
