Surrealist photographer Maurice Tabard used unconventional techniques such as double exposure, combination printing, and solarization to produce otherworldly images that toyed with reality. In images such as Untitled (Solarized Double Exposure), Tabard fused the silvery halo-effect of the solarization process with multiple exposures of bare tree branches and large unidentifiable shapes. Tabard studied at the Photographic Institute of New York and refined his skills as a portrait photographer at the acclaimed Bachrach Studios. He met Man Ray after moving back to his native France and began to experiment more seriously with avant-garde techniques. In Paris, Tabard worked as a fashion photographer for publications such as Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar. His fine art photographs have been included in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art and Julien Levy Gallery.
