A Cambridge May Week scene from 2013, sold at a Cambridge Drawing Society exhibition (see Alt Text)

These Cambridge scenes of people dressed up to attend May Balls were very popular but I won't be revisiting this subject matter because times have changed (I have some old ones that might get a little reworking). People don't stand around like this anymore: they rush to their destination with phones clapped to their ears. I suppose some might find them elitist but bioscientists etc are just throwing on a posh frock to celebrate reaching their finals. This is on stiff paper and combines gouache, oil pastel and acrylic ink applied with a dip pen. I find you can scrub water-based paint over oil pastel and then work over it (you can't do that with soft pastel)

One of my Cambridge May Week paintings and pastels. This one wasn't signed and dated when I photographed the original in 2009. The scene is Senate House Passage with people dressed up for the Gonville and Caius May Ball. It found a buyer.
One of my Cambridge May Week paintings and pastels. This one wasn't signed and dated when I photographed the original in 2009 but I would have signed it before it was sold. This one was quite large and is oil pastel with ink penwork and gouache scrubbed over it.

A mixed media drawing of Cambridge May Ball attenders waiting on the Trinity College cobbles with St John's College in the background.
A mixed media drawing of Cambridge May Ball attenders waiting on the Trinity College cobbles with St John's College in the background. A theme that I pursued 20-odd years ago with quite a few sales.

Women in gowns and men in white tie and tails: just your average night out in Cambridge.
Large pastel of figures on Trinity College Cambridge forecourt. This is from 2002 and I must confess I wasn't shying away from popular subject matter (bills to pay). This sold in an exhibition.

Watercolour drawn direct with the brush showing Trinity Street, Cambridge during May Week. Sold a while ago.
Another Cambridge street painting. I think these old views of people dressed up and thronging the streets in celebration of their exams being over are a bit of an antidote to what's going on now (original sold a long time ago). Direct watercolour no predrawing.

A moderately large painting/drawing showing a Cambridge may week scene using oil pastel and body colour plus linear work using acrylic ink with a dip pen. Present whereabouts unknown.
A larger one in a similar vein. I think this one sold in a gallery exhibition (I don't know who has it now). Nice and wild in its technique.

I painted many Cambridge street scenes before I started peopling a series with the colourfully arrayed attenders at May Balls. It was a great theme for a while, of its time, because people seem different in recent times post-pandemic: less traditional and less inclined to dress up and stand around in the street unselfconsciously chatting. Anyway I don't want to overplay a successful theme.
Another Cambridge street scene from a few years ago, oil on canvas board, sold from a gallery exhibition. I produced a lot of paintings on this theme and will feed them gradually into Bluesky (see Alt Text). Probably won't be new ones as I feel I've done enough of these.

I used to think it was probably just some neighbours staying up and playing loud music because it's #MayWeek. After at least three years of observing this correlation, I'm starting to think it might be a #statistics causation!
watching the #Cambridge #MayWeek fireworks from my house. a little sad that it's probably my last #MayWeek experience after having been here for nearly five years. plenty of festivities going on this week as students celebrate the end of exams.

People in May Ball finery outside St John's College, Cambridge. One of my Mayweek paintings (not this one) was bought by St John's and is presumably hanging in the college somewhere.

One of the themes I explored to a very full extent was people meeting up and queuing for may balls. Having drawn these locations many times I took a lot of film photos and used them creatively to recompose the figure groupings.

These watercolour drawings pursue the May Week Cambridge theme. They were somewhat experimental and use acrylic ink with a dip pen over thick paper lightly primed with gesso.
