A horrible habit of some sailors who catch a mermaid is to “cut them a smile,” where they believe their mouth should be.
Sailors, in turn, are soon reminded that mermaids are spiteful, vengeful creatures. Not to mention persistent.

Mermaids have a similar euphoric reaction to pufferfish that dolphins do, but with a tragic element. They typically will become dependent on the high, keeping the fish stored in their jaws.
Over time they drift closer and closer to the surface, listless and pale. Easy to catch. #MerMay #MerMay24
As Mermaids relate to dolphins, so to do Sirens relate to whales. Large creatures that lurk in the deep, their lure allows them to draw in smaller, smarter prey, that they can then grab with their clawed fins.

Mermaids are omnivores, and will often use their long, drifting hair to lure small fish into the gaping maw along their back.
However, when bored they have been known to hunt larger prey - even each other.
