Thus any #Patreon like service that involves extensive human curation, tech support, and moderation will have a natural limit on how many artists/musicians/etc. it can support. Which means that none of #Metalabel, #Comradery, etc., are going to meet the needs of the typical artist/musician/etc. 5/
Thinking again about #Metalabel, #Comradery, etc. Based on my analysis of Patreon earnings, I have two hypotheses about "creator economy" services. First, earnings per creator drop off very fast once you get past the top 100, and continue dropping off just as fast for the next 1K, 10K, 100K, etc. 1/
Sorry, forgot to add: there's a metalabel.bsky.social on Bluesky that apparently belongs to #Metalabel, but it's posted only once in a year and a half. Their natural home seems to be on X and Substack. 4/4
So if you're someone within 1 or 2 degrees of separation from #Metalabel founders and current artists then you may have a good shot. But it's not clear if it's going to be a good platform for your typical random musician, artist, or indie game developer. Read more about it on Substack. 3/3
#Metalabel says it's for people creating "Art / Culture / Design / Games / Internet / Music / Performance / Podcasts / Publishing / Technology / Video and film" and has some heavy-hitters signed up (including Brian Eno). It's apparently invite-only and I presume will try to curate the offerings. 2/
Only a couple of days after I commented about the Patreon-like site #Comradery, a new contender appears on the scene, going public after an extended beta period: #Metalabel, the self-described "first release platform for creative work" (for a specific definition of "release", I presume?). 1/
