U.S. Rep. John James announces campaign for Michigan governor Republican U.S. Rep. John James of Shelby Township announced Monday that he'll run to be Michigan's next governor in 2026, adding a high-profile candidate who's had close ties to President Donald Trump to the race. James, a businessman by trade, was first elected to the U.S. House in 2022. Previously, he campaigned unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in both 2018 and 2020. In a statement posted on social media, James said he decided to seek the governor's office instead of reelection to his battleground seat in Metro Detroit after "deep reflection, prayer and conversations with my wife and children." "It's time to get Michigan's government out of fantasyland and back to common sense," James, 43, said in the statement. "President Trump and I have been in each other's corner through thick and thin for eight years — no reason that will end now. "He's doing his part to Make America Great Again, and I'll do mine to bring prosperity and sanity back to Michigan." James has been an ally of Trump in Michigan since the president endorsed him during his first U.S. Senate bid in 2018. James ultimately lost that race to then-U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, by 6 percentage points, 46%-52%. In 2020, James was narrowly defeated by Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, 48%-50%. But in March 2022, Trump endorsed James for the U.S. House seat he currently holds. And in November, James won a second term representing the 10th District, which includes portions of Macomb and Oakland County counties, beating Democrat Carl Marlinga, 51%-45%. Trump remains heavily influential in Republican politics and could, if he decided to, assist with James' bid for the GOP nomination for governor in 2026. Another Trump ally, former candidate for governor Tudor Dixon of Norton Shores, has also been considering launching a campaign. Michigan's current governor, Democrat Gretchen Whitmer, can't run again in 2026 because of term limits. In his statement on social media, James said Michigan "has suffered long enough." "Michigan is strong. Our people are strong," James said. "But we are being held back by a lack of strong, competent leadership — leadership with real-world experience in the areas Michiganders need most." His statement noted that he previously ran an automotive business and served in the military. Some Republicans had hoped that James would run again in the 10th District next year, because his departure now sets up Democrats for an opportunity to flip a seat in key district. Three Republican candidates have already formed committees to run for governor so far: former Attorney General Mike Cox of Livonia, state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt of Porter Township and former U.S. House candidate Anthony Hudson of Grand Blanc Township. On the Democratic side, three candidates have formed committees: Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson of Detroit, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II of Detroit and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson of Fenton. cmauger@detroitnews.com Want to comment on this story? Become a subscriber today. Click here. @jocelynbenson.bsky.social Super excited for your run for governor. As a former Marine from Ann Arbor it's awesome to see warriors like you and your husband willing to keep fighting when it seems like impending doom from the President
