RBC expects these companies to benefit from NATO’s higher defense spending goal Investing.com - NATO’s decision this week to increase its defense spending target should bode well for defense stocks, according to analysts at RBC Capital Markets. In a note, the analysts said, with the focus now on how European member states in the alliance will lift their domestic spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, Air France, Safran (EPA:SAF) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) stand to be major beneficiaries of the uptick. "While the 5% goal will be broadly beneficial across our coverage, we highlight Airbus (~23% revenue defense/space) and Safran (~20% revenue defense/space) given their greater exposure to European defense compared to U.S. firms, which we believe has strong growth opportunity off of today’s spending levels, as well as Lockheed Martin, which derives ~11% of revenue from Europe," the strategists argued. Following a short summit on Wednesday, NATO signed off on the increased defense spending goal. The 32 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization also reiterated their shared commitment to shield each other, saying in a brief statement that "an attack on one is an attack on all" -- the central stipulation of the all-important Article Five of NATO’s founding treaty. U.S. President Donald Trump had initially sparked fears over the U.S.’s backing of Article Five when he told reporters before the summit that the section had "numerous definitions." Yet Trump assuaged some of the worries when he said the U.S. is with NATO members "all the way." Despite facing longstanding complaints from Trump over perceived low spending compared to Washington and an over-reliance on the U.S., as well as worries over possible security risks posed by Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, reports say NATO’s agreement nearly collapsed due largely to objections from Spain. Still, all NATO members backed a statement establishing the 5% target, which was divided into 3.5% of GDP spent over the next decade on core defense like troops and a further 1.5% on defense-related sectors and infrastructure. Spain declared it does not need to meet the target and can live up to its commitments by spending less, adding that it does not anticipate its stance to have any repercussions. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who had lobbied for the elevated spending levels as part of a bid to ensure Trump’s support prior to the summit, acknowledged that it would likely not be easy for European countries and Canada to meet these targets. But he argued that it was crucial they do so "given this threat from the Russians, given the international security situation." With AIRF making headlines, savvy investors are asking: Is it truly valued fairly? In a market full of overpriced darlings, identifying true value can be challenging. InvestingPro's advanced AI algorithms have analyzed AIRF alongside thousands of other stocks to uncover hidden gems. US Congress seeks to boost Navy and Air Force fleets in 2026 bill WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The House Appropriations Committee’s Defense subcommittee released its draft bill for fiscal-year 2026 late on Tuesday, which aims to buy one additional F-35 jet versus the Pentagon’s 2025 budget request and make investments in naval vessels, and missile defenses. The powerful committee’s draft of its version of the 2026 purchasing bill was released ahead of any formal input from the Trump administration’s Pentagon - which has been delayed. The language in the bill shows the Republican-controlled Congress’ continued focus on modernizing the U.S. armed forces but sets up a tug of war with the Pentagon over what could be conflicting priorities. The bill, which still needs input from the full House and Senate, directs the Pentagon to buy 69 Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) F-35 fighters for $8.5 billion, 15 Boeing (NYSE:BA) KC-46 aerial refueling tankers for $2.7 billion, and three F-15EX aircraft for $345 million as well as $3.8 billion in funding for Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC)’s B-21 stealth bomber program. The Pentagon’s 2026 budget request, which has not been released, requests 47 F-35s, according to media reports. The Navy’s non-fighter aviation procurement includes four E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft for $1.2 billion and 19 CH-53K heavy transport helicopters for $2 billion. The bill also emphasizes missile defense, with approximately $13 billion to Missile Defense Agency and the Space Force program’s support of the "Golden Dome" initiative. This money would be above the approximately $25 billion that Congress has earmarked for Golden Dome in its reconciliation bill. The committee’s draft bill would also give military personnel a 3.8% increase in basic pay, effective January 1, 2026. The bill directs the Pentagon to procure 28 naval vessels, including two Virginia-class submarines made by General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) at $6.2 billion. The Columbia-class submarine program would receive $5.3 billion. Both programs have additional funding for advance procurement underscoring the strategic importance of the United States’ underwater fleet. Surface fleet additions would include two DDG-51 destroyers, refueling ships, towing and rescue ships and surveillance vessels.

Trump requests $893 billion for national defense, flat versus 2025 WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump is asking Congress for a national defense budget of $892.6 billion for fiscal year 2026, flat compared to 2025 spending. The budget request, unveiled by the White House on Friday, prioritizes rebuilding the military, re-establishing deterrence, and promoting national security. The White House Office of Management and Budget "is not requesting a trillion-dollar budget. It is requesting a budget of $892.6 billion, which is a cut in real terms," Republican Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement. "This budget would decrease President Trump’s military options and his negotiating leverage." The proposed national security figure includes funding for the Department of Defense, as well as other agencies and programs that contribute to the country’s security and defense. In addition to the budget request, congressional Republicans plan to introduce a $150-billion defense package as part of Trump’s sweeping tax cuts bill, which will cut taxes by $5 trillion and add $5.7 trillion to the federal government’s debt over the next decade. Funds associated with the massive reconciliation bill can begin to be spent once the bill passes, and will last into 2026. According to a statement from the White House, the Defense Department budget request "builds on the President’s promise to achieve peace through strength by providing the resources to rebuild our military, re-establish deterrence, and revive the warrior ethos of our Armed Forces." The budget request will now be subject to review and debate in Congress, with lawmakers expected to weigh in on the proposed spending levels and priorities in the coming weeks and months.
