House restores local share for new mineral permits, directing 20% of severance tax to counties HB10‑89 will direct 20% of mineral severance tax revenues from new permits (after July 1, 2026) to the county where minerals are severed, reversing a decades‑long effective cap on some counties' receipts, supporters said the change will return revenues to impacted communities.

House Bill 10-89 is set to revitalize local economies by restoring a long-lost 20% share of mineral severance tax revenue to counties after decades of stagnation.

House Rules Committee advances measure to overturn BLM mineral withdrawal in Minnesota The Rules Committee voted to report H.J. Res. 140, a Congressional Review Act measure to overturn Bureau of Land Management Public Land Order 79‑17 that withdrew 225,504 acres in the Superior National Forest; proponents said it restores access to critical minerals, while opponents warned it would undermine long‑term protections for the Boundary Waters and tribal stewardship.

US, Indonesia discussing strategic management of critical minerals trade, minister says By Stefanno Sulaiman JAKARTA (Reuters) -The United States and Indonesia are discussing joint measures to monitor and manage trade in Indonesian critical minerals that have strategic value, an Indonesian minister said on Thursday as he gave details of ongoing talks between the two countries. Indonesia is one of only a only a handful of countries to strike a deal with Washington to lower U.S. tariffs ahead of an August 1 deadline. The deal - referred to by the White House as an agreement on the negotiating framework - saw tariff rates on Indonesian products lowered to 19% from an earlier 32%. But chief economic minister Airlangga Hartarto told journalists that the two sides were still in discussions about how to better regulate trade in vital, dual-use commodities. "Strategic trade management is important to ensure transparency between both parties so that imports and exports of dual-function commodities with strategic value can be monitored," he said in a briefing on the agreement recently struck with the United States. Commodities considered strategic are those used in Artificial Intelligence infrastructure, data centres, aviation, and the aerospace and space flight industries, he said. "So they (the United States) want to ensure that these strategic components do not fall into the hands of certain parties, including for use in terrorism or other purposes," Airlangga said. Indonesia, an archipelago and the largest economy of Southeast Asia, has large reserves of a number of critical minerals as well as deposits of rare earth elements. It is also the world’s largest producer of nickel products, the biggest exporter of tin, and a major producer of copper. Chinese companies currently dominate the processing industry for nickel and bauxite in Indonesia. Airlangga also said that negotiations were on between the two countries to lower tariffs on Indonesian commodities entering the United States, adding that the rate could be close to 0%. He also added the two were discussing rules of origin and to what extent a "third party vendor" can be involved to be eligible for the lower tariff rates offered to Indonesian exports entering the U.S. market. Namib IV drilling reveals promising uranium deposits Elevate Uranium Limited has confirmed the discovery of a large mineralised zone at its Namib IV tenement, part of the broader Koppies Uranium Project in Namibia. The identified area spans approximately 11 kilometres in length and 7.5 kilometres in width, marking a significant step forward in the company’s exploration efforts. “The Koppies Uranium Project continues to expand outside of the Koppies Resource Area, with uranium mineralisation at the Namib IV tenement increasing,” says managing director Murray Hill. The company’s current drilling programme aims to determine the full extent of the mineralisation, with infill drilling planned at a later stage to define high-grade zones ahead of a maiden resource estimate. Namib IV lies around 10 kilometres south of the existing Koppies resource and has been the focus of extensive exploration this year, targeting both central and conceptual zones in the northwestern, southwestern, and southeastern parts of the tenement. The latest phase of broad-spaced drilling concluded last month. Hill says the company’s exploration approach had evolved to include new target types: “Our exploration programmes have diversified over the past 12 months to include a variety of targets in addition to the more traditional palaeochannel hosted style of mineralisation.” While calcrete-hosted uranium was identified in palaeochannel areas, the majority of intersections were found in basement rocks, such as weathered granite and carbonate-veined schist, often away from the expected palaeochannel zones. “We have identified mineralisation in basement lithologies at Koppies and Hirabeb, and now at Namib IV. These targets open a new search space for us, no longer restricting exploration to palaeochannel uranium deposits,” Hill says. Drilling results show the mineralisation typically begins just 6.5 metres below the surface, indicating shallow deposits similar to those already found at Koppies. Since the end of March, 118 holes have been drilled and gamma probed, covering a total of 3 322 metres. Hill notes that any resource estimate emerging from Namib IV would contribute to the wider Koppies Uranium Project and could potentially enhance its production capacity or mine life. The post Namib IV drilling reveals promising uranium deposits appeared first on The Namibian.

Australia is ’safe and reliable’ critical minerals alternative, minister says PARIS (Reuters) -Australia offers a secure alternative supply for critical minerals vital to industry, its trade minister Don Farrell said on Thursday, in the face of rising concerns about Beijing’s dominance of the sector. China’s decision in April to suspend exports of a wide range of rare earths and related magnets crucial to sectors ranging from automakers to aerospace and defence was widely seen as Beijing using that dominance for leverage in its trade war with the Trump administration. While China is a top global producer of 30 of the 50 minerals considered critical by the U.S. Geological Survey, Australia has some of the largest critical minerals deposits. "We think we can be a safe and reliable supplier into the supply chain for critical minerals around the world," Farrell told Reuters in an interview. But Australia does not want to just "dig and ship" the minerals and aims to process them as well, although that would require capital from outside such as the European Union, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and India, he said. The EU and Australia signed a partnership agreement last year to develop critical materials along the supply chain ranging from extraction to refining and processing leftover waste. Farrell said critical minerals could end up in a free trade agreement with the EU that Australia and the bloc are trying to revive after talks broke down in 2023, mainly over agriculture. Australia has sent top trade officials to Brussels this week to nail down the next steps forward as both sides seek access to alternative markets as the Trump administration aggressively builds tariff barriers to its trade partners. "I think there is now impetus on both sides to look at another crack at the agreement," Farrell said in Paris, where he met EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on the sidelines of a meeting at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. The United States, which has had a free trade agreement with Australia for two decades, ran a $17.9 billion trade surplus with the country last year, according to Greer’s office.
