<p>Flămânzeam și eram nevoite să păştem vitele sătenilor pentru a ne hrăni cât de cât. Într-o iarnă, sora mea mai mică a început s-o roage pe mama să-i dea un covrig.</p>
<p>În casă nu se găsea nici un pic de făină, dar fetița insista. Atunci mama, pierzându-şi răbdarea, a întors-o cu fața spre icoana Sfântului Nicolae și i-a spus:</p>
<blockquote><p>„Roagă-l pe Sfântul Nicolae să-ți trimită un covrig”.</p></blockquote>
<p>După această discuție, timp de două zile a bântuit un viscol cumplit.</p>

<p>În dimineața celei de a doua zile, când a ieșit soarele, mama a auzit o ușoară bătaie în ușă.</p>
<p>M-a trimis pe mine să deschid, crezând că venise vecina. Deschizând uşa, am zărit agățat de gard un şirag mare de covrigi rumeni.</p>

<p>Mama nu m-a crezut. Ne-a îmbrăcat repede pe mine i pe sora mea și ne-a trimis în sat să aflăm: poate i-a uitat cineva? Zăpada era proaspătă; nu se vedea nicăieri nici o urmă.</p>

De fapt se întâmplase cu adevărat o minune, deoarece nimeni din locuitorii satului nu putea să ne facă un astfel de cadou: foamea bântuia în toate casele.</p>
<p>Venind acasă, mama ne-a aşezat în faţa icoanei sfântului și ne-a spus:</p>
<blockquote><p>„Mulțumiți Sfântului Nicolae, Făcătorul de minuni!” și ne-a dat la fiecare câte un covrig.</p></blockquote>
<p>Aceşti covrigi ne-au ajuns pentru mult timp.</p>
