Ölü sayısı 200'ü geçti Mokwa Bölge Başkan Yardımcısı Musa Kimboku, yaptığı açıklamada, 29 Mayıs'ta Niger eyaletine bağlı Mokwa bölgesinde aşırı yağışların neden olduğu sellerde ölü sayısının 200'ü aştığını belirtti. Kimboku, seller nedeniyle hayatını kaybedenler için toplu cenaze düzenlendiğini ifade etti. Artık hayatta kalan kimsenin bulunmadığına inanıldığı için kurtarma çalışmalarının durdurulduğunu aktaran Kimboku, ayrıca hastalığın yayılmasını önlemek amacıyla bölgede önlemler alındığını söyledi. Niger eyaletine bağlı Mokwa bölgesinde 29 Mayıs'ta meydana gelen sellerde 3 binden fazla kişinin yerinden olduğu açıklanmıştı. Tropikal iklim kuşağındaki ülkede yıllık ortalama yağış miktarı, bölgesel olarak farklılık gösteriyor. Nijerya Su Bakanlığı, ülkenin bazı bölgeleri için şiddetli yağış ve sel uyarısında bulunmuştu. Nijerya hükümeti, geçen yıl şiddetli yağışların yol açtığı sellerde 1235 kişinin hayatını kaybettiğini, 1,2 milyondan fazla kişinin yerinden olduğunu açıklamıştı.
