If a Monarch caterpillar attached itself to one of the leaves of a "food plant" to pupate, we would wait until hardened and hang it from silk dental floss in a separate enclosure. Caterpillars aren't too bright. They would eat the leaf, and the chrysalis could become damaged. #MonarchRanch

Mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) chrysalid. Fun fact: They can move while in chrysalis. The top part of their cuticle is hinged. So cool. #StayCurious #MonarchRanch #NotAMonarch
No matter how much milkweed there was, the Monarch caterpillars would always prefer to dine with their relatives. #MonarchRanch #PlantMilkweed

This is me feeding a non-flying Monarch butterfly at our little #MonarchRanch. We made up a special nectar recipe and fed it several times a day. #BeKind #PlantMilkweed
I always thought the most beautiful Monarch butterflies were those with tattered and well-worn wings. This female was still flying strong and left us with a bunch of eggs thay day. #MonarchRanch #PlantMilkweed.
