Front Porch Forum is an interesting social media platform in Vermont
Half the population of Vermont uses it
Heavily moderated, focused on local communities, it’s also ad-driven
But contrary to major social platforms, its users enjoy to use it

Xitter has agreed, apparently verbally in court, to pause its use of EU data for training its AI
For what I understand, the Irish watchdog hasn't withdrawn its lawsuit

"Also, X has changed its business model. When Sound Transit launched @Alerts_ST, X allowed Sound Transit to link to our email/text alerts distribution tool and automatically post rider alerts. Now, X charges organizations to post automatically. When X made the change, peer transit agencies like King County Metro and Community Transit retired their alerts channels."
Another casualty of Elon Musk's poor decisions at Xitter: last month, Sound Transit, the agency running Seattle's light rail, has retired its alerts account
One reason is the new, very expensive, enterprise pricing

GARM, the ad group recently sued by Xitter, disbanded
It was a nonprofit, apparently that had very limited resources
The effect of this lawsuit on actual advertisers is unclear to me, as they have a lot more money to defend themselves. They won’t be intimidated by Xitter.

Wait, Bluesky does support oEmbed? Is this new?
It's neat!
(If you ever used a content manager system such as WordPress or Ghost, oEmbed allows embedding a post in a webpage just by pasting its URL)

Threads and Bluesky are trending on Xitter in the UK, due to the far-right riots
It’s interesting to note that there is ~6.5 times more posts about Threads than about Bluesky, despite Threads having ~200 times more monthly active users than Bluesky
#MonitoringSocialWeb
After Elon Musk incited far-right riots in the United Kingdom, there’s now a spike of registrations (and other events) on Bluesky, from UK users
What’s also interesting is how different metrics behave
It’s not always enough to characterize a platform by just one metric

The Irish privacy watchdog is suing Xitter for a possible GDPR breach
Xitter uses European users' data to train its AI model Grok, without explicitly asking for consent

It’ll be interesting to see what comes out of these discussions about product/market positioning!

Xitter is suing advertisers for “illegal boycott”
This new development is such an embarrassment for Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino that there is no need to comment further. At this point, the jokes just write themselves.

The upcoming changes in the Following feed are massive, and I can’t wait for them to ship!

The financial state of Xitter is actually a lot worse than what I expected
The company is wildly unprofitable, and worse, there’s no clear path to profitability

"Twitter’s US revenue is down -83% from $661M in Q2 of 2022 to $114M in Q2 of 2024"

-83%…

It will soon be possible to restrict who can quote post a post on Bluesky, a very welcomed addition in my opinion!

Very interesting development: Stephen Colbert questioned why Joe Biden posted his letter on Xitter as if it was a legitimate place to do it.
This is a major blow to Elon Musk’s project, when mainstream media starts to ask this kind of question.

Elon Musk is turning Xitter into a literal fascist propaganda machine.

Very interesting read!

Xitter aside, Threads has one of the worst "moderation" ever.
I just posted this, as a reaction to yet another dumb and homophobic conspiracy theory from Tucker Carlson: www.threads.net/@o_simardcas....
Guess what Meta told me?

I still have the Xitter app installed on my iPad and the size of their ads for Premium are increasingly bigger.
This one occupies more than half of my screen.
Am I smelling desperation?

Shots have been fired during a Donald Trump rally and Threads is showing me… pictures of storms.
Don’t get me wrong, I love pictures of storms.
But it’s really not what I’m interested to see *right now*.
Threads is so useless and nonsensical. What a giant blunder by Meta.

Xitter is demanding Australian employees Elon Musk fired to give back part of their severance package.
The reason? Xitter botched the conversion rate between US dollars and Australian dollars.
It's so on brand with Elon Musk's general incompetence.
