This is due to his magical affinity and when he gets serious in a fight his body overheats and in some cases catches alight with magical flame making any of his strikes cause serious burn damage.

The guard opens up the Wagon to look in seeing only crates bags of feed, a trunk and some pots. He begins by examining everything he can see moving the trunk then looking around the crates before then looking into the pots. Oddly Rei and Yuri cannot be seen anywhere in here its as if they disappeared somewhere...but where?
