Thousands of blue-black spheres ranging in size from 15 mm to 60 mm lie on the surface of red-orange sandstone. The nodules collect in small depressions. Moqui marbles are iron and manganese concretions that weather out of some layers of the extensive Navajo sandstone formation found across southern Utah, northern Arizona, and south western Colorado. Similar concretions are found on the ocean floor today and were observed on Mars by the Martian rovers Spirit and Opportunity.
