As I see it, each and every American deserves equal protection under the law, including those in the LGBTQ+ community, who have been marginalized and harmed by state and federal policy—for this reason, I am a long-standing cosponsor of the Equality Act. Like you, I am troubled by many of the Trump administration’s recent policies relative to these communities and appreciate the opportunity to share my perspective on them. One of the President’s first actions of his second term was to revoke anti-discrimination protections for transgender federal employees and LGBTQ+ employees of federal contractors. Since then, the President has sought to slash members of the LGBTQ+ community from the federal workforce through the destruction of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and the termination of roles related to DEI. In my experience, diverse backgrounds bring innovative and unique perspectives to problem-solving—essential to addressing the complex and dynamic challenges that our country faces domestically and abroad. These efforts rob the federal workforce of some of our most valued and qualified public servants and diminish our nation’s regulatory bodies significantly. The President has taken similar action relative to our armed forces by banning capable, patriotic, and, in many cases, long-serving transgender service members from the military. This breaks faith with all those serving in our military and goes against the consensus from military leadership and the medical community that transgender troops are physically and mentally able to serve. Just as our mistaken policy regarding lesbian, gay, and bisexual members—Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell—harmed readiness and was ultimately repealed, I believe the implementation of President Trump’s executive order will also harm our natio…
